EMDR Therapy
What EMDR is:
A type of therapy that helps your brain heal from painful experiences
A way of helping “stuck” memories settle, so reminders stop bringing the pain back at full strength
One of the most researched treatments for trauma — recommended by the World Health Organization and the American Psychiatric Association
A therapy that works with your memory, not against it: you still remember what happened, but it stops feeling like it’s happening right now
When something deeply hurtful happens — like finding out about an affair — the memory of it can get stuck in your mind along with all the fear, shock, and pain of that moment. That’s why a small reminder today, like his phone lighting up or a certain song, can bring everything rushing back as if it’s happening all over again. In our sessions together, while you briefly bring a difficult memory to mind, I’ll guide your eyes to move back and forth — some people prefer gentle taps or soft tones instead. That back-and-forth movement is similar to what your brain does naturally during dream sleep, and it helps the brain finish processing the memory so it can finally rest. You stay in control the whole time: before we ever go near a hard memory, we build up your calm-down tools together, and we always move at a pace that feels manageable for you.
For women healing from betrayal, this often means the “mind movies” start to quiet down — the replays of the day you found out, and of everything you imagine happened. Triggers like his phone, a name, or a date on the calendar lose their punch. Sleep gets easier, the 2 a.m. spiraling slows, and your body stops living on high alert. And many women tell me the biggest change is quieter than all of that: they start trusting their own judgment again, and the shame that was never theirs to carry begins to lift.
What EMDR is not:
Not hypnosis — you’re awake, aware, and in charge from start to finish
Not memory erasing — it doesn’t make you forget what happened, or ask you to “just get over it”
Not retelling everything — you never have to relive every painful detail out loud
Not a decision about your marriage — whether to stay or go is your choice alone; EMDR simply helps you heal enough to decide from a place of strength instead of pain
